Ralph Sampson, Jr., Sun Pon, was born in The Dalles, Oregon and lived at Celilo until it was flooded by the creation of Dalles Dam in 1957. He was raised in Harrah, graduated from White Swan High School, and continued his education at the University of Washington and Oregon State University.

Sampson worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) for nearly 30 years before retiring. Stationed at the Glenwood Ranger Station he served as a Wildland Fire Fighter, journeyman Log Scaler, and Timber Sales Officer. His career provided extensive experience in natural resource management, public service, and stewardship of Tribal lands.

Sampson was first elected to Yakama Nation Tribal Council in 2005 and served until 2009. He was re-elected in 2023 and is the Chairman of the Health, Employment, Welfare Recreation, Youth Activities Committee (Chairman); Law & Order Committee (Chairman); and Veteran’s Committee (Chairman). He also serves on the Loan, Extension, Education and Housing Committee (Member).

Sampson believes in government transparency. He is committed to strengthening communication between Tribal government and the People it serves. His priorities include promoting government transparency, accountability, and greater community engagement in Tribal affairs.
